HOW THE FAIRIES CAME HOME...

many years ago, two young Victorian girls, while on holiday at the seashore, made a discovery that would change the course of history.

While wandering the dunes they happened upon a colony of tiny winged creatures adorned with seashells and sea glass.
They returned as the sun went behind the clouds and caught sight of them frolicking across the sand, leaving a trail of shining stars behind them.

In the morning, just before their holiday was coming to an end,
the girls stole away once more and gathered the tiny beings up in a blanket and stowed them away in their satchel.

Once the long journey home to the mountains was over,
the girls released their tiny treasures into the sanctuary of the Cottage garden.

As another day dawned the girls were excited to see how the little residents had settled into their new home.
The fairies had spent many years at the side of the sea and coming to the mountains would be quite an adventure for them.

The garden appeared empty and many days passed before the girls caught a glimpse of the small creatures.
But, little by little, there were signs.

First they noticed a fairy ring
so they knew that the fairies were once again dancing...

   ...and little doorways...

...were spotted among tree roots and rocks.

Finally, there appeared a small blue wheelbarrow
and the beginnings of a community garden...

...a place where a much needed rest could be taken after an evening of chasing moonbeams
 and placing wishes on stars.

The fairies did survive
and now if you get a rare chance to see one, they will be clothed in tree leaves with acorn shells for hats.
They have adapted to the mountain lifestyle.

So once again the little ones roam freely at dusk, trailing bright strings of stars in their wake...

...and even though you must tread lightly while enjoying the garden at night
and all large creatures with sharp teeth and big eyes must be kept at bay,
the fairies are finally home and...

SIGNS OF SUMMER...

A few days ago Yvonne from StoneGable posted about the ten signs of summer around her cottage and invited us to post some of our own.

So even though it's not officially summer yet here are some of the things that remind me of this glorious time of the year.

Trips to the Farmer's Market...

...the sound of the lawn sprinkler...

...a bouquet of fresh flowers...

...porch sitting...

...a summer hat and a good book...

...flags, parades and fireworks...

...drives in the country and the mountain air...

...California sunshine...

...bird song...

...the Grand Illumination...

...blue skies, white clouds and sun rays...

...the sweet scent of lavender...

... the beauty of hydrangeas...

...fairy fixins...

...first cherries of the season...

...tea parties and picnics...

...a summer evening sunset...

...open doors and lamplight.

There may be a little more than ten here.

All brought to you with anticipation!

What reminds you of summer?

Fireflies...

What??

In California?

Yes, if you believe in the magic of summer.
