As I write this, I have just received the newest issue of Victoria Magazine.
It is a beautiful summer morning, and I am having my coffee on the screened porch
looking out into the Secret Garden.
The Star jasmine is climbing up into the gazebo
and blooming against the cooling backdrop of green ivy...
...and the hummers have started to come sip
the nectar prepared just for them.
I think I mentioned in my last post (long, long ago)
that there were signs that the little house wrens might be checking into our Airbnb cottage again.
Yes, they were.
They seem to be settling in, bringing little treasures to make their stay a comfortable one.
Mama Wren is already sitting on the eggs,
and Papa Wren is very busily bringing her whatever her little heart desires.
Such a sweet sight.
As I open the pages of my magazine and take my first sip of coffee,
I notice that the theme of this month's issue is Summer Romance.
I have taken the liberty of using those words as the title of this post.
That exactly describes what the time has been for me this season so far.
I have been lucky enough to do only the things that make me happy this summer.
I have not felt pushed or obligated to do any mundane projects,
although there are plenty of those remaining,
and I don't feel guilty that I haven't.
I did think about starting my holiday decorating on Memorial Day
but then decided that I would wait for July 4th.
So far, our weather has been quite lovely which is always wonderful.
We got some planting done in the garden and I got my hair cut.
It hasn't been cut since the beginning days of Covid.
Now, none of these things are exactly what you would call "romantic"
but if I can call this summer a time full of quiet and peaceful endeavors, shared with my Captain,
then that is romance enough for me.
I have been painting a lot. I have almost filled three journals so far.
I am only doing flowers at this time and trying to perfect my style the best that I can.
I am watching a lot of YouTube channels, and I do feel I am improving.
I actually am quite proud that I am now drawing all of my content myself
and am starting to be more confident about putting paint to paper without any guidelines first.
I remember when I first wanted to ride a bike. I thought I could just get on and go.
Painting is a lot like that for me, but I have learned
that you have to do a lot of practice before the magic can happen.
So, I keep going.
The kids came up last weekend to celebrate Father's Day with the Captain.
While they were here Bean had an accident.
She stepped on some gum while out on a walk
and her medical staff, AKA Jacenda, Tami and Jake performed emergency surgery.
They used peanut butter to soften the gum,
but I think the patient ate most of the medication.
The gazebo is not the only place that has Star jasmine this summer.
The dining room porch is really showing off this year.
The garden is nice and colorful now
and the Old School phlox is very green and full, preparing to bloom soon.
The Captain is very excited about the tiny tomatoes that are showing up on his plants.
I hope everyone is well.
It feels so good to post again.
Probably won't be back until next month with hopefully some patriotic decor to show off.
I hope you all are enjoying your own special style
of Summer Romance
and basking in the words of Anne Shirley of Green Gables:
"I believe the nicest and sweetest days
are not those in which anything very splendid happens
but just those that bring simple little pleasures."
...xxoJudy...
Until then, we will all be here just watching birds.
What a lovely post, Judy. It's so good to see you here. It's all lovely but I have to rave at how your painting has just blossomed (no pun intended!) It's absolutely gorgeous and you can see from the three you shared here how very much you have developed. I'm so excited for you!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Jeanie. Some don't come out as well. More than some! But I am loving it therefore I don't get much else done. Happy Summer..xxoJudy
DeleteAw, simply lovely...I laughed at your puppy's accident...eating the medication...lol. Have a lovely summer and your paintings look wonderful. I'm doing something maybe 3-4 times a week, and that makes it seem like a simple pleasure to escape into paint/pen/paper! Hugs, Sandi
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Sandi. I love the painting so much that I don't get much else done' Glad to see you keep plugging away..Happy Summer..xxoJudy
DeleteHi Judy.. and a summer "hello"!!! Yes.. a summer should be romantic! I want to go lay down in the sand by the ocean, in the evening, and look up at the starry skies! Now that to me would be dreamy. I've added it to my bucket list for this summer! I'm also looking into putting a little bistro table and chairs out behind my trailer, so I can sit there in the evenings and look out at the wonderful scenery of trees, pasture and sky. I always have a "to do" list which I don't like, but seems like there is always something to be done. I make the lists but only refer to them now and then to see if I've actually done anything! Now and then I do! I love your posts... love seeing your beautiful painting works of art. You are so talented! Take care... and enjoy your porch, your gardens, decorating and painting. What better pleasures could there be? plus enjoying it all with the Captain! Hugs... Marilyn
ReplyDeleteHi Marilyn. I never was much of a fan of the ocean, but now that I live far away I miss it. A bistro table and chairs would be so pretty and sounds like you have a gorgeous view. I quit making lists as I never seem to follow them but I don't know why I am enjoying this time so much. I usually am anxious and guilty when I don't accomplish much but I am happy I can overlook it for awhile at least..Happy Summer..xxoJudy
DeleteHello sweet friend. So good to see you post. Glad things are good. Your flowers are looking beautiful and little wrens coming back to stay for the summer at the cottage. How sweet. Glad you are painting and enjoying a nice summer so far. Ha Ha little Bean having gum surgery. Peanut butter heals all things lol! Have a great week. Hugs. Kris
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Kris. My blooms are becoming spent so look kind of straggly. The little birds are too cute. Wow, that poor papa works so hard. I told Jerry he shouldn't complain after seeing that little guy. I am so glad to be able to have something to post about for a change. Hope you are having a wonderful summer so far..xxoJudy
DeleteGood to see your post! I'm happy you are enjoying your summer. My new Victoria arrived yesterday, so, like you, I was delighted to enjoy it out on my own sunporch. I've been living with my patriotic decor since Memorial Day. It's my tradition to enjoy my red, white, and blue from Memorial Day to Labor Day. After the 4th, I usualy tweak things to be a bit more nautical, but the patriotic vibe remains. Your sweet birds made me smile. I've had quite the convention of cardinals of late. It's such fun to watch them. Just this afternoon, I noticed that there is a nest within the topiary at my front door. I take that as a good omen! Happy Summer, my friend!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Sarah. I usually like to do the red, white and blue starting at Memorial Day and then tweak it a bit for summer but I just didn't get around to it this year for whatever reason. Those little birds are the cutest little things. They dart in an out of the Secret Garden going about their business and then full force go through that little hole in the wall. Their eyesight must be phenomenal. I have never seen a Cardinal in real life. Bet they are just gorgeous..Happy Summer to you..xxoJudy
