THE FRONT PORCH EXPERIENCE

 A porch is....

....An outdoor room, halfway between the world of the street and the world of the home.

Rebecca Wells

A Front porch is....

....A postcard of all who live just beyond the door.

Alda Ellis

The front porch of the Cottage is a calming little spot to while away some quiet time on a busy day.

It looks out over the garden and a person is reminded of days gone by when it was a place where friends and neighbors, passing by, were greeted with a wave of the hand and a politely said howdy-do.

It is a cool place to rest one's weary body after tending to the garden's needs in the hot sun.

A place to sit and peruse the wonderful stories and pictures in a good book.

And a place to partake of a bit of sustenance to refresh the body and the mind.

A porch....

....Comes halfway to meet a guest, with outstretched hands, and bids him a lingering goodbye when he must go.

Dorothy Scarborough

The porch has revitalized another day, and with that quintessential summer sound of the screen door closing, forever etched in our memory, we move on to the more complicated things in life....Judy

  10. Hi Judy, what a lovely front porch. I love the pretty blue and yellow fabric with the white wicker furniture. Some of best memories are of swinging in the swing on our front porch when I was a child. Our front porch is too small and too close to the street to have a sitting area but we have been talking about getting a swing for the back porch. Have a wonderful weekend, Judy! ----------- Shannon

  13. when you wrote "screen door closing" it brought back right away memories of childhood when my sisters and I use to run through the screen door to the front porch to play. love your post and several pictures would make a very nice postcard. I love your inviting porch.

  14. Hi Judy!
What a joy it was to read your post! I love the pictures, the quotes, and thoughts on porch sitting.
I love a house with a porch! It has always been a 'MUST HAVE', on our requirement list when we have gone house hunting :)

I love our front porch, with it's glider, and living on Main street... we just watch the world, and tractors roll by :)

How unfortunate it is that so many of the newer homes have been built with out porches!
    Those owners are missing out!

Have a great weekend, my friend.

  15. You have a beautiful porch Judy, something you just don't see in the UK very often (no doubt due to our lack of sunshine). I love your blue and white paintwork, your white rattan furniture and your pretty ornamental birdcage. I imagine it makes everyone more sociable too.

  28. you and I are in the middle of kitcen remodel. Yours is finished with such memories! Your dad and making the cabinets and helping your and your husband. Great kitchen! I do not have a large kitchen. It is a gallie kitchen. I have one small counter space on each side of the sink. Then by the stove I have a 30 in counter space. I have a small rambler 50 yrs. old. a yr. ago we took our one and only bath and 3 wk. without a bath we have a lovely 21 century looking bathrm. Now the kitchen is a month into the remodel. We were on a very tight budget and we went through home depot and purchased the cabinets. They should be installed by Sept. Then by Oct. the granite counter tops will go in. We did knew kitchen floors in vinyle that looks like tile. we have a rec room off from the kitchen . So we extended the vinyle to the rec rm. where you walk outside. And put in new carpet in a med. taupe color. The formal lv. , dnrm, ad hallway will get new carpet after everyone is finished trampling through the house. The carpet was 30yrs. old. Thank you for the update. Great job, I really like your kitchen. I did find one ceramic chicken for my new kitchen.

    1. Hi. I don't know your name and I haven't got an e-mail address from you but I wanted to thank you for your kind comments to me on the kitchen remodel. It took us a really long time to finish and we went through Home Depot also except for the cabintets. I wanted to use real marble on the countertops but was talked out of it because it supposedly doesn't wear well, that is why I chose the quartz Silestone because it looked like marble to me. It is so easy to take care of. Sounds like yours will be beautiful with all you are putting into it. We have had the vinyl flooring down for about 23 years. It has taken a HUGE beating over the years and still looks like brand new, so couldn't justify changing it. I don't know where you live but if you have a Beverly's Fabric store nearby, go look at their chickens. The little white one on the window sill came from there for only $19. I just love it. I hope you come back around to read this. I appreciate your stopping by..Happy Thursday..Judy

  30. Wow! Judy,I really love this post but it is a shock to me . The reason is, I believe in everything you write and it causes me to look at my own porch with shock. Shock that the reflection, that they are of me, is hard to take in. We have a lovelly wrap-a-round porch all the way around our home. It looks like it belongs to a person with not an ounce of creativity, very easy to maintain but not telling anything about the heart of those that dwell inside. Maybe it says that age and pain have had their way and my logicial side has won the war over my creative side, shame on me. My wonderfrul husband of 50 years and I sit out back on the deck every chance we get, wanting to not miss one chance to enjoy the birds and the garden.Something has to change ,you have inspired me again.
    Thanks
    Bernice

  31. OMG, do you love Victoria magazine too??? It is one of my all time FAVORITE publications. I missed it so much when it ceased publication a few years ago. Thank goodness it is back.

The only thing that my house does not have that I wish it did is a front porch. It used to have a back porch. Next year I will make sure that I have another one put on.
