THE VESTIBULE

Don't worry you are not seeing double, the photo above was in my last post, Debbiedoo's Copy Cat Challenge.  I had this post ready to go when I heard about Debbie's challenge so set it on the back burner so I could show the lampshades I copied from Mary Alice of Chateau Chic. So.....

WELCOME TO THE COTTAGE..

Since the entry hall, or vestibule, in Victorian speak, is the only room in the house which isn't loaded down with stuff from the never ending kitchen redo, I thought I would give you a little peek of the first room you would see if you came to visit the Cottage.

The chest is an antique pine American Eastlake dresser from around the turn of the century. The knobs are old but are not original to the piece. The bowl and pitcher, with the silk peonies and roses, I made; the little milk glass dove was found in a junk shop without the bottom; the milk glass bowl I had in my collection along with the bird's nest and the little child's slippers.  The antique brass frame holds a picture of my Dad with his sister.

The lamps and shades are a bargain pair from Home Depot that I embellished, with the help of Mary Alice and that Copy Cat Challenge.

The little boy is a mannequin that was used for a child's clothing display in a department store in the 1950's. His cap, sailor suit and shoes are probably from around the 1920's, but don't quote me on that.  The vase is stamped Czechoslovakia.

This small hall tree is English oak.  When we lived in our other house we had a large American oak hall tree with a seat and large oval, beveled mirror.  It was beautiful and I loved it, but this little vestibule in the Cottage, is much smaller so we sold it.  I like this little one though.  It is a perfect place to hang my collection of hats, and to set a few treasures on the small glove box and some old umbrellas and canes in the drip tray.

Our front door has an etched picture of a stag, a doe and two fawns in a forest setting.  It is really pretty when the light comes through and reminds me of the property at my grandparent's home when I was young.  I don't like taking pictures with a flash but it was the only way I could capture the door, as I don't know a way to filter the light out coming in from the window with my little camera.

The wallpaper coordinates with the paper in the parlor.  I added a swag stencil under the border.  Don't ask me why! I just did and I have no excuse, but now I'm stuck with it.

The ceiling lamp is original to the Cottage.  It was added when electricity was first being installed in a few lucky homes. The smaller, down facing globe was powered by electricity and the larger, round globe still ran on gas. I guess the Victorian's really didn't trust the new fangled notion of 'let there be light'!

Well, there you have it.  A small tour of a small part of the Cottage.

Hope you felt welcome and that you will honor us with a return visit....Judy

  2. Judy, The second I'd walk in I'd be in love. What an entry. Your house is amazing. Love the wallpaper and crown molding around the doorways. Beautiful things. Your copy-cat lamp shades are great. I am crafting today and Just pulled out a little nest with robin eggs and thought about adding it to my project, then I tool a break and saw this! I think I love, love, love, it on the lamp shade with the burlap ribbon like that. Pretty.

Your door is lovely, and my impression from your front entrance is that you must have a very warm home, filled with warm personality and a wee bit of whimsy. Love it! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend.

  4. Your vestibule sure looks welcoming. It would be a dream to go and visit there one day, but I guess it'll stay as a dream. My dear HD doesn't want to travel so far, lol.
Here we have a really humid day today. Seems as we're going for a thunder storm soon!!
Hope you have a great day over there.

  6. Hi Judy!
I love your vestibule! How lucky you are to have a little entry like that.
    I wish we had one!

It still makes me laugh when I think about the gas lights/electric light controversy.
    Who knew?
I would have been one of those that embraced electricity! Any little thing to make my life easier~~~~LOL!

What a great etched window too!

What year was your home built, and how many square feet is it?
    I'm just curious.
We've had so many old homes, but this one has been quite a challenge for me.
It is only about 2000 sq. ft. and it was built in the arts and crafts style/farmhouse style.
We certainly are leaning toward the farmhouse/cottage style of decorating.

    Have a great day!!

    Smiles :)

  8. Welcome to the world of blogging, sugar. I'm visiting from Feathered Nest Friday and saw the words "gold country" and knew I had to drop by for a visit. We're from northern California also but relocated to Idaho several years ago. I love Calif. and kids are still there.

Your little lamps are gorgeous!!! I just last night revamped a lamp but it won't be showing for a few more days but I love lamp re-dos.

    Nice to meet you, sweetpea.

    xoxo,

  9. Judy, you have done a very nice job making your vestibule warm and welcoming. The pine chest is lovely alone but looks extra lovely with your gorgeous lamps and pretty things. The blue vase is simply beautiful. I love the color, the shape and the pretty flowers and leaves on it. I could go on but I will just say I love your cottage.------------- Shannon

  10. I love your home and the way you have it decorated. Very welcoming entry way and I do love the glass in the door. The boy mannequin, what a find.
I guess the Victorians were afraid of fire maybe or fuses constantly being blown with the ceiling lamps back then. I enjoyed my visit.

  27. Your entry way is absolutely enchanting. It is hard to say what I liked best, but I do love the bird-nest lampshades and that little pair of shoes are a perfect touch. You made me remember that somewhere in my hall closet I have my first cowgirl boots, I was around two or three years old when I wore them. I'm going to dig them out and put them on the shelf in my bedroom . . . thanks for inspiring me. Also, thank you for the lovely comment you left on my blog. I'm delighted that you liked my ceiling. Have a great week, Connie :)

I loved the pics and story from the farmers market and the history behind the home. I want to return... gotta get to the kitchen dishes first, though! I sure hate to see Lilace Lane Cottage go.
