A PAINTING AND THE PANDEMIC...

Do you ever think
 how your world will be
after The Pandemic?

 I wonder
if I will feel funny hugging anybody,
I wonder
if the great little shops in my town
will survive,
 I wonder
how it will feel buying my own groceries, and
 I wonder
if I will ever take anything
 for granted again.

To all these questions I say,
 I hope not.

While I am
looking out my kitchen window now,
I sense a beautiful spring day
that has the sweet scent of roses
in the air.
That is as it always is
this time of year,
 but even so,
 we now know
 how swiftly some things
 can change.

 My guess is
that, no matter,
 how large or small
those changes may be
the acceptance
  will be up to us,
 as individuals.

Many of you will remember
I ordered a paint by number kit
of the Cottage.
I painted it rather quickly and
 enjoyed doing it.
  When I saw another
paint by number company on Pinterest,
I ordered two others.
 I was very excited and
couldn't wait to start on one.
This was sometime last summer, and
I did post about it,
 but I was quickly disappointed
as all the lines and numbers
were too small for me to see clearly.
I did a very small section and
realized I couldn't stay in the lines,
 so I put it away.

I painted the Santa's at Christmas and
tried my hand at watercolors,
but I find them frustrating and
not easily manageable for me.
 In the meantime
we acquired a lighted magnifier glass,
 so I decided to tackle
the paint by numbers kit again.

 During this time
 of quarantine,
 we can't have
 idle hands.

I had painted
 the sunflower
 on my first go-round and
when I opened the little paints
I found them to be
full of thick chunks
with some even dried up.
Now I could see them but
had no paint.
 I took each color and
matched them as closely as I could
 to my acrylic craft paints.
They are not a perfect match
but good enough
in my estimation.

This is the first sunflower
using the paints from the kit...

...this is what that same sunflower
 looks like now
that I painted my own mix over it.
 A subtle difference and
I found that the
 acrylics have
 better coverage.

I even took some liberties and
painted what should have been
stalks of wheat and
turned them into
butterfly bush flowers.

I am looking forward
to finishing this painting and
so far
 I'm quite pleased with
the way it is
turning out.

This is a screen shot
that I took off of the company's website.
  This is what the painting
should look like.
I can do a little tweaking
after it is finished
to make some parts
 stand out over others,
but as I see it so far,
 there is a slight difference,
but is it a
good difference or a bad difference?
 I think it is
 neither.

Under the circumstances,
I did with it
the best that I could, and
that is all
we can ever do.

 While things may be different
after this pandemic is all over,
we can hope that
we can make the best of
 whatever changes there may be,
good or bad.

 We go about life
doing the best that we can and
if that best is
a little different at times,
whether in a painting or a pandemic,
we will survive.

I will keep you informed
as to the painting's progress and
 give you all the particulars
at a later date.

Stay safe and stay well...

...Judy...

When life
 gives you lemons,

  1. This is going to be very pretty, I love the subject you choose.

Watercolors are hard to handle, have you tried mixing your acrylic paints (the ones in the tubes) with Liquitex Mat-Medium, applied to canvas? It allows you to use the paint in the same way as oils, you can go over and correct mistakes, blend, etc. When finished it can be varnished and looks just like an oil painting. That's what I use, I like the control and the ability to make changes and corrections.

Your Lady Banks rose over the gate is beautiful, it must give you great joy to look out on.

    1. Thanks so much, Adrienne. I have not tried the acrylics in the tubes but in watching some YouTube videos, they look easy and better to use so I will be investing in some soon. I will ask for help, I'm sure, when I do. The Lady Banks isn't as prolific this year but still a beautiful sight..Stay well, my friend..xxoJudy

    2. They are very much like oil paints, the difference is that you use water or what I like, a mat medium, if you want to dilute them, the big difference is the clean-up...just with a bit of soap and water. I hope that you will give them a try and let me know if you do.

  2. We wonder many of the same things, as you might expect. But I think we can feel very certain that we will never take anything for granted after this.

I think the painting will be lovely but let me offer you a bit of advice. Don't let the numbers rule you. I've seen your art and what you do on the Santa pieces is the same as the sunflower. Use the numbers and colors as a guide, but let it be yours. You have th eskill, the talent, the color sense, everything. The numbers are just a starter.

    1. Thanks so much, Jeanie. I appreciate your confidence in me so much, and hopefully someday it will be earned! I am progressing with the painting and am really happy with my choice of mixing colors. Not the same but still pretty. I will be able to tell more when it is done. I could not take liberties to go outside the lines on this one. Too much going on that I could never make look right. Even though I would love to have the talent to do so, I do enjoy the look of a paint by number painting. Brings back so many old memories and that is why I chose this particular company..Stay well and safe..xxoJudy

  3. So love the painting of the house. When this pandemic is over, folks will either go back to the same old ways, or some will stop shaking hands and keep their distance. Janice

    1. Thanks so much, Janice. I am so glad I have that particular painting. It is one that I couldn't have painted myself although the roof paint is all mine. The pic I sent into the company to draw from had sun light over the roof, which I didn't even notice, so it showed up beige in their machine. It just wouldn't have looked right that way. I suppose you are right about some going back to the old ways. It looks like that is happenening even already..Take care and stay well..xxoJudy

  5. Wowwie! Your lilacs and roses are so beautiful! I can just imagine how magnificent they must smell.

Great job on the paint by numbers!
Of course, the sunflower painting is just the most perfect subject to paint... **smile**.

    Warm wishes..

  6. Thanks, Kerin. They are beautiful and I love seeing them out the window. When we take the dogs out at night, I can smell them from the front porch and they are all around the side of the house. The smell is intoxicating but not the sneezing! Last two years I am allergic to them so no more picking for bouquets. So sad and maddening as they are my favorite flower. Yes, I know that the sunflower would be your favorite. Can't wait until I finish it, I think it is turning out pretty well so far..Take care and stay well, my friend..xxoJudy

  7. Okay, now you have had so much fun with the kits. Time to start out on your own....pick a photo or part of a photo...make a copy on your computer. Put it in your photo editing program...and remove the color to black and white. If you play with the contrast, you can almost make an outline of the shapes, and you have the beginning of a painting. You can blow the pattern up by a set percentage and make it as big as you want. Just piece the enlarged parts together. Lots of fun, I love your style, I think you are just a couple of copies away from moving out 100% on your own! Sandi

    1. Thanks so much, Sandi. I am having a laughing fit, not at you but with you! I look at YouTube on my Ipad every night when I go to bed, sometimes I don't go to sleep until way after midnight. I see all the artists and they make everything look so easy but when I get up and actually put brush to paper there is a huge disconnect between my head and my hand! I did see someone paint hydrangea blossoms which I think I might try but have to get through this painting maze before I can. When I finally get to sleep, I don't count sheep, I count tiny little bits of paint blobs..Thanks for your confidence!..Stay well..xxoJudy

  8. Where did you say you got your home paint by number? I like that. I love the sunflowers and it's so relaxing and I find it addicting.. Can't stop painting once I start. My eyes I think are worse since I beaded a picture and so much close work.
Things will go back to the same as they were before. I am already hugging my grands and never stopped really. Just being careful like always. Kids need to be reminded to sneeze in their elbow or shirt. We as kids were always reminded not sneeze or cough without covering our mouths and always keep our hands out of our faces. That is one thing I hope changes that kids are taught better about being clean and how to behave around others. Well, some adults for that matter. We've been out and about here going on drives and getting dinner picked up to bring home. My husband has been working from home but going downtown once in a while. Mom is in the nursing home doing well and they are adhering to a strict routine and no one can visit but they have set up face time on zoom with families and we look forward to that.

    Take care , betsy

    1. Thanks Betsy. Sounds like things are moving along at your house. I ordered the kit from Country Living. In the magazine, always on the back page, there is a photograph that they turn into a paint by number kit for $35. I have gotten a couple from them but the one of the Cottage is a special order and it cost $65, but I am glad I have it and think it was worth the money. I tried to get on to their website just to see if it was still available but I can't for some reason. I have let my subscription lapse to the magazine as I think it has become too slick and so many advertisements, so maybe that is why I can't get on, but just google Paint by Number kits from Country Living and maybe you can get on if you are interested. Glad you are getting to hug the grands. I haven't seen mine for months but do talk on the phone. How is your Mom doing? It is so sad that nursing homes are having so much trouble and the thought of the ones dying without any loved ones nearby is heart breaking. So glad that she is well and you can communicate with her..Take care and stay well..xxoJudy

  9. Oh your painting is so pretty, Judy! I love the bright colors and your joke at the end. We have to laugh, right? As for your questions? I've been wondering about a lot of those same things lately, too, as we get closer to opening up the state. We still have a very long way to go, but my kids can't stay in forever. They are young and while they have been so compliant and wonderful, staying in for weeks on end, I want them to have a life...to have freedom to hug and shop and move about without fear. I'm not sure they will, but I'd like to think it's possible. I hope you stay safe and I can't wait to see your lovely completed painting. xo

    1. Thanks so much, Kim. I am looking forward to finishing it too. So far I am pretty happy with it. It must be hard for the young ones as they really do thrive on friends and catching up with each other. I know Jake and Jacenda have been walking on the beach, hopefully it isn't too crowded. Jake has not been traveling for work but doing everything from home, so I am glad of that. I hope all this doesn't mess up Jacenda getting her degree. All her classes are closed and a lot of them were done in person with patients. She only has about 6 months to finish. I hope they all are careful as there can be much still going around that no one is aware of. There is still a long way to go to get this under control, I'm afraid. I'm staying in, not too hard for an oldie..Stay well and take care..xxoJudy

I hope we will be able to do what we are used to doing, even if it is still just sitting in our homes, but without restrictions. There is alot that needs to be worked out for me..Just saying!..Take care and stay well..xxoJudy

  12. Dear Judy ~ What a treat your post is! I'm sitting here smiling. Today is a new day, may I continually rejoice and be glad in it. I love your house paint-by-number and the sunflower one that you are working on. What a great way to wile away some time during this season of isolation. ~ I love your garden gate with the roses. ~ Thank you for being the inspiration that you are and for your words of encouragement to us all. I will be glad to finish so I can start another. My "art schooling" is progressing believe it or not and I might be getting closer to an "original"! Haha..Thanks for your kind words, I really appreciate them..Stay safe and well my friend..xxoJudy

  13. Judy,
Love all your paintings and you do much better than i would do because I do not have a steady hand nor the fine motor dexterity to paint like that... I will be doing some painting some...Just touching up some large metal flower posts from the garden that faded in the Sun...However, our lives will change with all of this...Some people will look at all the negative things but I will look at all the positive things that all of this has created like families spending more time together especially young families with their children, people slowing down a bit, enjoying a simple walk in a park or hiking in a forrest, learning different ways to communicate and to do things.... And for me , just being able to enjoy the home that I worked so hard to create from a house...
Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by and for letting me know that you did by leaving a comment!! Stay safe, healthy and happy!!
    Hugs,
    Debbie

  14. Thanks, Deb. All your words are so true, although I am really glad that I don't have to do any home schooling! I do hope that we can all slow down a bit and enjoy what we have. Speaking for myself, it could be so much worse. I do miss spending time with my kids and grandson, but they are so careful of us and as they are working out in the public where there are so many unknowns, they don't want to take any chances. I can live with that and know that it will be all the more special when all is said and done..Take care, my friend, and stay well..xxoJudy

  15. I did some research on paint by number kits when I watched some YouTube videos on it. I just kind of "ran into" them and it got me excited. I used to love paint by number as a child. But the research I did came up mostly with not so good reviews. Either the numbers were too small or faint or the paints came dried up or clumpy. Your idea of just using acrylics of your own is a good one... seems like that would solve problems. I didn't find any good reviews on kits that had good paint! Your sunflowers will be beautiful once done, and it's fun to take liberties and change things up. One of these days I may get a small kit as it's very relaxing just following their design. I watch alot of painting videos on YT also and they do make it look so easy! I just can't seem to get myself to take the time and sit down, get set up for painting and just DO IT! I know I can do it, but I guess it's not my top priority right now. I think of the future with this pandemic and I think I now am a "germaphobe" and will for a long time be afraid to go out and mix and mingle around other people! I was going to go visit a friend today who is moving away, and I want to hug her and have my picture taken with her, but I'm afraid to! "what if she has some of those germs on her?"" it's awful to feel that way and I hope after awhile, when the virus slows down (will it really?) that we can feel somewhat safe again, and great it just like another flu bug where we need to be careful and stay away from those who are sick with it. I hope it comes to that and becomes just another flu bug. I just don't know. Blessings to you! Marilyn

  16. Thanks, Marilyn. I opened this painting way last summer and opened some of the paints. They were OK at first although don't seem to cover as well as my acrylics, but I think I might not have closed them up as well as I should have and that is why they clumped. I need to have my glasses changed and that is why I couldn't see the lines and numbers too well but with the magnifier it is fine. I like the fact that I am using my own paints and it is fun trying to mix and match the colors. I hope to get some acrylics in the tubes when I can get out. It is said that they are much better than the little plastic squeeze bottles of paints. It sure is a life saver for me to have this painting to do. I don't do too well with too much time on my hands. I had to go out to have blood taken the other day but wore my mask and there wasn't anyone at the lab except the technicians and then I scrubbed my hands really well when I got home even though I wore rubber gloves also. I don't plan on going out anytime soon. I feel very sorry for the ones who are losing money but I value my life over all of that and can not for the life of me think how there is anything better than their lives or their families. I also notice people are not wearing masks as they should either and I feel there is no excuse for that. I guess they think because the ones in charge of our country don't then they don't have to either. So disgusting and unresponsible. Don't get me started, I get so mad..There will be a shot, just like the regular flu, but it will not be too soon..Take care, my friend, and get yourself a paint by number to do. You will enjoy it..xxoJudy
