There are more beautiful places on Planet Earth than not.
One of the most beautiful,
if I may be so bold,
is California, where we live.
But, as in all things good,
there is the possibility of hidden evils
and California's
is forest fires.
Last Wednesday,
we were comfortably partaking
of one of our favorite pastimes,
watching TV,
when we noticed
through partially drawn blinds,
a menacing sky.
We commented on
how different it looked,
wondering if there might be
a thunder storm brewing,
and then went back to our movie.
A few moments later
our next door neighbor called
and asked if we were
ready to evacuate!
What?!!
It is hard for me
to explain the feeling of fear,
but we all know what it feels like
when our body first responds to it.
The River Fire first started in a campground near the town of Colfax.
At the point that we heard about it,
that town was under
mandatory evacuation orders.
( Those orders have since been lifted).
Where the fire started, just over the other side of those trees
in far right background.
As the crow flies,
we are not much more than
a half hour drive from Colfax.
The conditions were slightly windy
and we had no idea
which way the fire was moving.
The only thing we had heard
at that point was
the time it had started, where it started and that it was fast moving.
In a matter of just a short time,
it had burned 1000 acres.
It was a scary thought
to go to bed that night,
although from all accounts,
we were not included
in any evacuation orders.
We awoke on Thursday morning
to blue skies over the Cottage
and only a slight amount of smoke
could be seen in the distance.
We were breathing easy as we had just watched on Netflix
the documentary pertaining to
the Paradise, California, Camp fire
from last year
and had seen how these things
can change in an instant.
However, Friday morning
was a different story.
Although the fire continues to burn,
we still remain safe
and so grateful and thankful,
but we are being consumed by
the worst invasion of smoke
that we have seen so far.
The Cottage is an old house,
and when we did the renovations
we wanted to keep
what was "original" to the structure
as much as possible.
We did not replace most of the windows and we did not tear out
most of the outside walls,
therefore there are walls
that do not have any insulation.
We have been keeping the doors closed
as much as possible,
but the fumes from the smoke
have invaded our space
and, frankly,
it is a bit uncomfortable.
we can do uncomfortable).
Our thoughts are with those
that are truly affected by all the fires.
As of Saturday,
the fire had consumed 2600 acres
with 88 structures lost and 30% contained.
Thankfully so far
there are no lives lost,
only 3 injuries reported,
none serious, with one of them
being a firefighter.
This part of the country
and these beautiful forests
are a draw for people and their animals.
I can't even imagine
how horrible it would be
to have your life and property
threatened in this way
and how to deal with it.
Stay safe everyone and take care.
There are threats to the lives
that we all lead,
at times and in one way or another,
and we have to be so careful.
...Judy...
Better times ahead!
UPDATE:
As of yesterday,
the fire was 68% contained
with 2,617 acres burned.
A huge thank you
to all the firefighters
who fought, and are still fighting,
the area's wildfires.

Judy, I can't imagine what it's like to deal with all the smoke much less the possibility of fire destroying your property. I'm so glad you and you're beautiful home are safe!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Stacy. Thanks to all those hardworking firefighters and the luck of how the wind blew, we remain safe. I feel so badly for all those that lost their homes and all of the wild animals that were undoubtedly involved..Happy Tuesday..xxoJudy
DeleteYou know I worried about you since the wind was blowing your way, we watched it for hours and went to sleep knowing it was blowing away from us. My heart breaks for those that fled for their lives, it was so fast, thank god no one lost their lives, losing everything else pales compared to their immediate safety. it does make cry and shake, we lost our house August 17th last year, I pray we don't have it happen again in our lifetime...
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Jain. I remember when you lost your beautiful home last year. I can't even imagine how horrible that would be. We were concerned when we first saw the terrible sky and the smoke, but thanks to all the firefighters involved we are now safe.. We can breath a sigh of relief now, but when is all this going to stop? Global warming and Covid are two things that I hope will be eradicated in my life time..Happy Tuesday..xxoJudy
DeleteI'm so glad you are safe and also that you didn't have to evacuate. And I think I would have been up all night, not slept a wink until I knew it wasn't coming close. Much for which to be grateful today, Judy.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Jeanie. Yes, we have much to be thankful for. It was hard to go to bed and I did keep waking up all night long and checking..Happy Tuesday..xxoJudy
DeleteI'm so glad you are safe Judy. It's crazy almost 2000 miles away we have been choking on smoke from the fires. Chicago is basically built in a dishpan, a large dishpan. 45 miles out we are at the base of hills where eventually the water drains to the Mississippi, instead of Lake Michigan. If we have an East or NE wind..everything pools in the dishpan--ie, pollution and smoke YIKES, stay safe, breathe as easy as you can...tape your windows...if necessary. Hugs, Sandi
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Sandi. It is not quite as bad now with the fire being more contained and moving further away. It was really scary for awhile. Neither Jerry or I are much good at reading maps so it was hard to figure out where everything was for awhile. Where we sit at the bottom of a hill, things seem to settle closely around, even in the house cooking smells tend to reach some rooms and not others. But it is better now. Hopefully the Dixie fire will be taken care of soon. We still get smoke from that one too. Jake has his best friend fighting that one. They are all such a worry. Rain would be nice..Happy Tuesday..xxoJudy
DeleteSo very scary Judy. The fires are a constant every year. We got an an alert on our phones. I feel so many who have lost so much. I am glad the fire is pretty much contained. Still lost their homes. The Dixie fire is another story. Practically the whole town burned. Stay safe and pray we get rain soon. Xo
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Linda. Today they are saying they are going to do a "walk through" the fire area but it is pretty much contained. That Dixie fire is terrible. So many affected by it. Jake's best friend is one of those fighting it. I hope it will be over soon..Happy Weekend..xxoJudy
DeletePrayers for you, your husband and most of CA who are dealing with these horrible fires. California's smoke drifted our way and made for a smoky weekend here where we live. And the sunset was a dark orange color Saturday night. We are expecting a lot of rain this weekend, I wish I could send some to CA. Please stay safe!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. We could gladly take some of your rain if we could! It continues to be hot here, but the fire in our general area is contained now so that is very good news. We can't help but think, though, when is the next one going to be? That is the reality of it now..I appreciate your visits and your kind thoughts..Happy Weekend..xxoJudy
DeleteWhere I live in California we had evacuations ordered near us and lots of oppressive smoke, and a great tip is to buy a portable room air purifier, I have two for different parts of the house. They filter out pollen, dust and help eliminate smoke. Plus of course we needed to keep the house all closed up. Be safe my friend.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Terra. That sounds like good advice. Just before the fire started we purchased two air conditioners, but that was because of the heat. Now we just have to get them installed as it seems like we will be needing them for awhile yet..The fire closest to us is now under control so we are not dealing with the smoke now..Happy Weekend..xxoJudy
DeleteHi Judy,
ReplyDeleteI have been watching and listening to news on the fires in California and Canada. It is really hard to think your beautiful home, land and sanctuary can be gone in an instant from the fires. I am glad you are safe and the fire is not a threat to your beautiful home. Terry said the worse firefighting job is that of the forest fire guys that fight those fires. They are not paid a lot and they work tirelessly for days and put their lives on the line. Thank God for those heros. I truly understand the smell of smoke. They are working on the condo across from us now for over month and the smell of smoke as they are tearing things out to replace is horrible. So I can only imagine the smell and seeing the smoke filled air outside your home. Stay safe and I pray every day for those in the path of the fire and those that have lost so much can find peace in their new reality. Take care. xoxo Kris
Thanks so much, Kris. It is fully contained now and the smoke is gone. Now, we just wait for the next one, it seems like. We took a little ride and saw so many signs thanking all the firefighters, and I tend to think of the boots on the ground, but in our paper this morning there was a cartoon thanking them but also the ones who fly overhead dropping water on the fires, and so many citizens volunteer. It is nice to see. We are so concerned about Jake's best friend among the ones fighting the Dixie fire. There seems no end in sight for that one yet..Happy Weekend..xxoJudy
DeleteJudy - we are praying for California and this situation. So glad you are all right. Right as "rain" would be better though! We pray this comes under complete control.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Bernideen. I think it is under control as of today. These fires are so scary and it seems that people are affected by them near and far. Hopefully, we will have no more, but the experts say that isn't likely..Thanks for your kinds thoughts and words. We appreciate them all..Happy Weekend..xxoJudy
DeletePrayers that the wildfires subside soon. We had hazy days from the smoke reaching us here in Michigan. Take care my friend. Janice
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Janice. It is under control as of now. Read that they will be doing a walk-around the area before they say for sure. The skies are fairly clear once again although we are still getting some from the Dixie fire that continues to grow.. It is amazing how the smoke travels..Happy Weekend..xxoJudy
DeleteJudy, what a scary situation. I'm so sorry. I think about you every time I hear there's a fire and hope that it's nowhere near you. Glad things seem to be under control now. Please be careful!! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Kim. One comes and goes and another takes its place. That seems to be the reality but we got lucky with this one. Are doing OK but the heat is still here..Happy Weekend..xxoJudy
DeleteJudy,
ReplyDeleteWhat a frightening situation for you!!! I am so sorry that you have to go through this...Here it is not fire that people fear but flooding from the rivers.....That is why I chose not to live anywhere near it...Thanks so much for stopping by!!
Please stay safe and vigilant as the fire is not out yet...
Hugs,
Deb
Thanks so much, Deb. I appreciate your visit and kind thoughts. I guess there doesn't seem to be many places left where one can stay out of trouble. Not only are we concerned about the fires, but the Covid cases are building here by leaps and bounds. 102 cases from just yesterday. Maybe under a rock someplace will work!! We are still hot here but thankfully the smoke isn't a problem right now..Happy Weekend..xxoJudy
DeleteGreat verses❤
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Kinga. Hope you are enjoying summer..xxoJudy
DeleteWhen you were talking about what fear feels like, When felt fear when something really bad happened, it made my heart pump so hard that it was heard in the ears. Terrible for you to have to go through that! I am sure you were wondering what the heck to grab first if you had to evacuate. My husband wants to get a metal box so all important papers, pictures etc.. can be grabbed right away if need be. I am getting one very soon. So good to hear that you are safe first and your home. One darn thing after another it seems. Something we're having and that is a LOT of rain with some flooding in areas. Porch was taking in some water around door from so much coming down hard all at once. Sounds minor to what you have experienced. Hugs Betsy
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Betsy, and I am sorry it has taken me so long to answer. These are some different and hard times all over the world it seems. I imagine it will only get worse. The smoke is bad now with the fires still burning in California. I will be so glad to see fall here and hopefully that will help all the problems..Happy Tuesday..xxoJudy
